Exclusive: Copa America 2028 - The Bidding War Heats Up

The 2028 Copa America is just a few years away, and the continent-wide football tournament is generating a buzz that transcends the playing field. For the first time since 1995, the prestigious competition is up for bidding, and numerous countries are throwing their hats into the ring in a high-stakes game of continental football politics. This article takes a closer look at the bidding process, the frontrunners, and what this means for the tournament's future.

Copa America, or the South American Football Championship, is a tournament governed by CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, which represents 10 nations in the region. The competition is renowned for producing some of the fiercest football rivalries, with household names such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Pele once electrifying the event. With its rich history and jagged edge, Copa America has drawn in fans worldwide. More than any edition in history, the 2028 edition will henceforth illustrate this contest's grand prowess.

The Bidding Process: A Complex Dance

The bidding process for Copa America 2028 is a convoluted dance that involves several stages and stakeholders. In recent years, CONMEBOL has undergone a significant overhaul, with a new president and a fresh board that has committed to making the organization more transparent and accountable. The bidding process for Copa America 2028 is overseen by the CONMEBOL's Audit Board, which is comprised of independent experts that monitor all bidding processes to prevent corruption.

According to the CONMEBOL statutes, the bidding process starts with a Letter of Intent (LOI), submitted to the Audit Board by any interested national associations. Once the LOI is reviewed and approved, the potential host(s) move on to the next stage, which involves the submission of a detailed Host Country Report (HCR). The HCR lays out details such as infrastructure, accommodation, and transport options for teams and officials.

"We want to ensure that the bidding process is as transparent as possible, providing our members and everyone interested in bidding, insights into the operational requirements needed to put on a successful Copa America," said Conmebol Secretary-General Vicente Cecchiello in an interview. "Our Audit Board has produced comprehensive rules for the bidding process, ensuring fair and equal treatment for all bidders."

Potential hosts are required to provide infrastructure, including accommodation, stadiums, venues, construction, and logistical services, in addition to upfront investment, preliminary works, and an economic plan.

### Mandatory Infrastructure Requirements

Here are some of the requirements for each potential host:

* Accommodation: The host country will be required to provide suitable accommodation for teams and officials. Temporary facilities may be used for this purpose.

* Stadium: Top-level venues are required for Copa America. Suppliers will need to provide 6 pitches that are inside a secure stadium media hospitality to ensure that our attention is attracted in the requested arenas.

* Infrastructure: Suitable infrastructure must be provided including fans capacity, venue management venues, adjacent venues and administrative and organisational access facilities. Advances access requests can include press conference centers and receiving areas for materials.
